Description
The OMAP5912 Starter Kit (OSK) for Portable Data Terminals (PDT) is a low cost, easy to use, convenient way of evaluating the features of the OMAP5912 Processor in next generation PDT devices. The kit includes a development board, and a collection of board and chip specific libraries as well as a suite of development tools for Linux with an OMAP5912 specific Linux kernel. The kit allows users to get started on a portable data terminal-based application and device development.
Features
The OSK Module is designed on a multi-layer printed circuit board using surface mount technology. The printed circuit board measures 5.55 x 3.54 inches (141 x 90 mm.). The OSK Module operates at +5 volts at less than 250 milliamps. Its operating temperature range is 0-70 degrees centigrade.
Hardware and Software Compatibility
The OSK Module has a TI and ARM Multi-ICE JTAG interface which allows communications to a host computer via a JTAG emulator or Multi-ICE. The TI JTAG interface is compatible with the XDS560 emulator from Texas Instruments and the complete line of JTAG emulators from Spectrum Digital. Software drivers for Spectrum Digital emulators to operate with TI's Code Composer Studio are provided with their emulators. In addition updated drivers are available from the Spectrum Digital website.

Reference Framework 6 - Reference Frameworks for eXpressDSP Software are provided as starterware for developing applications that use DSP/BIOS and the TMS320 DSP Algorithm Standard (also known as XDAIS). Developers first select the Reference Framework Level that best approximates their system and its future needs. Developers then adapt the framework and populate it with eXpressDSP-compliant algorithms. Since common elements such as memory management, device drivers, and channel encapsulation are pre-configured in the frameworks, developers can focus on their systems unique needs and achieve better overall productivity.
DSP BIOS Link for on-chip inter-processor communication between ARM and DSP - To develop applications that reside on dual cores, developers must implement communications software that enables data and control information to be exchanged between the ARM and the DSP.
The ARM must boot the DSP and control which algorithms the DSP executes for a specific task. In the past, developers have had to create these functions from scratch. DSP/BIOS Link eliminates this task by providing a robust set of ARM-DSP communications services for TI's OMAP platform.
The reference frameworks contain design-ready, reusable, C language source code for the DSP. Developers can build on top of the framework, confident that the underlying pieces are robust and appropriate for the characteristics of the target application. DSP/BIOS Link offers the following features:
•Point-to-point, asynchronous data streaming between the ARM and DSP
•Messaging between the ARM and DSP
•Bootload the DSP from ARM
•Pre-tested ARM-DSP communications driver support for OMAP
•Scalable footprint on both microprocessor and DSP
Board Support Library - The Board Support Library (BSL) provides a C-language interface for configuring and controlling all on-board devices. The library consists of discrete modules that are built and archived into a library file. Each module represents an individual application program interface (API) and is referred to simply as an API module. The module granularity is structured so each device is implemented in an individual API module. The goal of the BSL is to provide a level of hardware abstraction and software standardization that improves development time and portability.
